Is it true that urine comes out when you squirt?

Squirting, or a “jet orgasm,” is the involuntary release of a colorless fluid in a woman before, during, or after orgasm.

Most likely, diluted urine is indeed released during it, but how and why this happens is not fully understood. The results of the limited studies available suggest that the fluid during squirting is expelled from the bladder. Sometimes it is mixed with so-called female ejaculate — a whitish, viscous fluid produced by specialized glands located on both sides of the urethra.

What fluids can be released by a woman during sex?

Four processes are known in which physiological fluids are released in a woman during sex.

Lubrication release. This is a normal physiological response to sexual arousal. Sources of vaginal lubrication:

  • Transudate — a fluid that seeps out from blood vessels in the vaginal walls that expand during sexual arousal
  • Secretion of the Bartholin’s glands — paired glands located at the vaginal opening
  • Cervical mucus from the cervix — released only during ovulation

Coital urinary incontinence. This is associated with dysfunction of the bladder and its sphincter and appears as involuntary leakage of urine during intercourse due to physical strain and movement. It is more common in women with stress urinary incontinence.

Female ejaculation. During ejaculation, women release a small amount — usually up to 5 ml — of a whitish, viscous fluid. The source is the paraurethral glands, also known as the Skene’s glands, located along the urethra. These glands develop from the same cells as the male prostate, which is why they are sometimes referred to as the “female prostate.”

It is believed that Skene’s glands produce a substance that lubricates the urethral opening for more comfortable urination, and they may also help prevent urinary tract infections. During sexual arousal, they swell due to increased blood flow and can release fluid during orgasm, similar to male ejaculation.

Squirting. This is the release of a colorless, odorless fluid in relatively large amounts during intense sexual arousal or orgasm.

What is squirting?

What is considered squirting.
The volume of fluid released during squirting can reach several dozen — sometimes even over a hundred — milliliters. Among the organs of the urinary and reproductive system, only the bladder can store such an amount, which is why scientists have always suspected that it is actually urine. However, they were puzzled by the fact that the fluid released during squirting is colorless and odorless, whereas urine has a color and a characteristic smell. To clarify this, researchers conducted several experiments.

In a 2001 study, seven women were brought to orgasm with squirting, a catheter was inserted into the urethra, and all fluid released was collected. As a result, it was found that the volume ranged from 50 to 900 ml, that it comes from the bladder, and that it is urine — only less concentrated, diluted 4–5 times.

In a 2015 study, seven women first completely emptied their bladders. This was confirmed by ultrasound. Then they underwent two more ultrasounds: before squirting and after it. The second ultrasound showed that the bladder, which had been empty after urination, was filling with fluid again before squirting. And the third ultrasound showed the emptying of the organ. Based on biochemical analysis of the fluid, the authors also concluded that it is urine.

A third study was conducted in 2022 with only five women. They had a catheter inserted to empty the bladder, and then blue dye was introduced inside. The women were then brought to orgasm. The fluid released during squirting was blue, meaning it came from the bladder, and its composition was that of diluted urine. In four out of five women, ejaculate from the Skene’s glands was also detected.

At the same time, it is unknown why fluid accumulates in the bladder in such a large volume in a short time and then is involuntarily released. It should be noted that all three studies involved only 19 women.

What is the difference between squirting and female ejaculation.
These concepts are often confused even in scientific literature. Although there is evidence that fluid during squirting may contain secretions from the Skene’s glands, these are two different processes.

Does squirting affect pleasure during sex?

According to researchers, only 10–40% of women have ever experienced squirting at least once. What this ability depends on is unknown. Since this phenomenon is rare, it has been associated with heightened female sexuality and the ability to experience such a powerful orgasm that is inaccessible to those who do not squirt. However, surveys of women who have experienced squirting show that it is not always as pleasurable as commonly believed.

In 2021, the journal “Sexuality” published an article based on a survey of the subjective experiences of 28 women who had experienced squirting. It turned out that most of them squirt rarely. Often, it happens for the first time many years after the beginning of their sexual life, so women most often feel surprised during their first experience.

Opinions about the level of pleasure varied. Some described it as a “real awakening of sexuality,” others reported feelings of embarrassment and shame, and some did not even notice it had happened until they saw a wet bed. According to researchers, the experience during squirting depends not so much on physiological factors as on the knowledge of women and their partners about this phenomenon and their attitude toward it.

nice, everything is just very
got very wet»

Yes, some women who considered their squirting to be proof of their awakened sexuality described the experience as very pleasurable. At the same time, other women who were aware of squirting and associated it with a strong orgasm felt disappointed. “It wasn’t that pleasurable at all, everything just got very wet,” one of them described her sensations.

Women who were not aware of squirting sometimes experienced unpleasant feelings, for example: “I thought either I or my partner had urinated. I felt embarrassed and ashamed.”

According to the survey results, even women who know what squirting is and experience it regularly sometimes perceive this ability negatively. The issue lies in the large amount of fluid: squirting produces a significant volume of liquid. This means that sheets need to be changed and the mattress dried.
